Programme Note

Reunited following their triumphal rendition of Tallis' Spem in Alium at the 2022 Festival, Oxford Camerata and Mayfield Consort join forces with Chelsea Camerata for this programme, which celebrates three important composer anniversaries. John Wilbye worked in Suffolk as the finest English composer of madrigals. Bruckner achieved fame as a Viennese symphonist, but he was at root a church musician whose choral motets are arresting and lush. Faure's Requiem has become a beacon of its genre and is heard here in its original version for strings and organ. Although Faure was a jobbing Parisian church organist, he wrote his Requiem because he wanted to, not because he was commissioned. Maybe that's why it's one of the most personal utterances of any composer from any period.
